About 150 of the green, purple, brown and clear glass and porcelain pieces are prominently displayed in Paul Deriso's home office on Fleming Island. Hundreds more line shelves in his garage. He handles them carefully, considers them historical artifacts, things of beauty.Deriso collects antique insulators, which were first designed in the 1840s to ground telegraph lines that lined railways, and later were used for telephone and electric lines."I love history. I really enjoy the history of it and the beauty of it," he said. "To me, they're works of art."The son of a railroad man, Deriso has been familiar with insulators since childhood. About 10 years ago, he came across a stash of them in a junk shop. A collector's passion was born.Deriso is coordinating the 50-member Dixie Jewels Insulator Club's Saturday, Feb. 21 show in Jacksonville Beach for Southeast collectors to show off, trade and buy.
